RUOK DAY – Thursday 14th September 2023

R U OK? Day (https://www.ruok.org.au/) is an important reminder of the power of a simple question. Held annually, this day encourages people from all walks of life to ask a seemingly straightforward yet profoundly meaningful question: “Are you okay?” It serves as a catalyst for conversations about mental health, emotional well-being, and the importance of checking in on those around us.

This imitative, originating in Australia, has since gained international recognition and participation. R U OK? Day strives to break down the barriers that often prevent individuals from sharing their struggles or seeking help when needed. It empowers friends, family members, colleagues, and even strangers to reach out to one another and offer support, empathy, and understanding.

According to Beyond Blue, approximately 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health condition in any given year. That’s around 20% of the population! In a world where the pressures and stressors of daily life can often lead to feelings of isolation and helplessness, R U OK? Day reminds us that a simple question can make a world of difference. It encourages us to connect on a deeper level, to listen with our ears and hearts, and to create a more compassionate and supportive community where everyone feels valued and cared for.

So, on R U OK? Day and every day, let’s remember the importance of asking, listening, and supporting one another, because a conversation can truly change a life. It is our ability to be curious, compassionate, and inquire about one’s life that can truly make such a difference. Don’t worry about finding the right words, just be with the individual in the moment.

You can use the four steps below to start a conversation that could change a life:
