RUOK Day 2022

RUOK DAY – Thursday 8th September 2022

RUOK Day (https://www.ruok.org.au/) is Australia’s national day of action when we are reminded to start a meaningful conversation with family, friends or workmates by asking the question, ‘Are you OK?’. This may arise if you begin to notice signs that someone you care about may be struggling with life. You may ask yourself, “Are they behaving differently than they normally would?”, “Do they seem withdrawn or agitated?”, or “Are they not themselves?”. Even if you have a slight concern, trust your gut and act on it. You can learn more about the signs and when it’s time to ask R U OK? ( here.)

Research conducted by the RUOK? charity has found that four in ten Australians feel like asking someone, “Are you OK?” is a better conversation had with a health professional. You don’t need to be a professional to check in with someone and have an RUOK? conversation. It is important for the well-being of others that they feel supported by their circle around them and asking this question can prove to be vital and valuable. Being able to start this conversation by asking this question and then listening, caring, and providing that security might be just what they need to help them through.

A conversation can truly change a life. So, for this RUOK? Day and every day, ask the question, be proactive, and be that safe haven for those around you. It is the intention, the kindness, and concern that makes the difference. Don’t worry about finding the right words or hesitate if you don’t know what to say next. Break the silence. Ask the question.

Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:
